Preeclampsia screening: early detection saves lives

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication marked by high blood pressure and organ damage, most commonly affecting the kidneys. It is caused by abnormal placental blood-vessel development that limits blood flow and triggers systemic effects in the mother.

When does it occur?

Usually after 20 weeks of pregnancy, though it can develop postpartum, up to six weeks after delivery.

Symptoms and danger signs

• Severe headache
• Visual disturbances
• Swelling of the face and hands
• Upper abdominal pain and nausea
